"WHY" Goes GREEN

In fact, we’ve lost our ‘virgin’ status.

That is – we are no longer using any virgin paper.

ZERO newly cut trees!

We’re FSC Certified, meaning our book uses only 100% PCW recycled paper.

“WHY” is so proud we can do our part to “be the change we want to see in the world”.

Our Decision to Go Green Has Saved the Following:

  • 71 full size trees will NOT be cut down
  • Solid waste:  4,537 pounds or 2,058 kg
  • Waste water:  42,823 gallons or 194,678 liters
  • Greenhouse gas emissions:  9,963 pounds or 4,519 kg
  • Natural gas:  10,383 square feet or 294 cubic meters (m3)

This is the Equivalent of:

  • 1.4 American football fields worth of trees
  • Enough water for a shower for 9 straight days
  • Emissions for 1 car for a full year

The Paper Used in “Why Do I Feel This Way?” 2009 Edition is:

  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified: 100% PCW (post-consumer waste) paper is sourced entirely from office/household recycled (blue box) paper. No new trees are cut and no virgin fibers are used.
  • Biogas Certified: Paper produced with Biogas - a green, renewable, sustainable fuel produced by the decomposition of waste in a landfill (breakdown of organic matter from manure, sewage, municipal waste, green waste, etc.). Biogas comprises primarily methane and carbon dioxide. Use of Biogas substantially reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Rainforest Alliance Certified: “Assures consumers that the wood products they purchase come from responsibly managed forests, where biodiversity is conserved and local communities are supported. Our SmartWood team of forestry professionals scrutinizes the practices of forestry operations and awards certification to those that meet the standards of the FSC for sustainable forestry.”  www.rainforest-alliance.org/forestry.cfm?id=main
  • PCF (Processed Chlorine Free): Paper manufactured with no chlorine! Can you believe it? The pulp and paper industry is the 3rd largest industrial polluter of air, water and land in Canada and the U.S. A single sheet of copy paper uses up to 13 ounces (more than a pop can) of water in chlorine-based processing. The average chlorine based pulp mill releases 50 million gallons of toxic water every single day. That’s roughly the amount of water it would take to fill a hole the size of a football field to a depth of 140 feet (the height of a 13-story building). That’s just at one mill - for one day. In North America there are over 80 of these mills.  www.rustletheleaf.com/0105_Lesson.pdf
  • Water Efficient: Paper manufactured using 80% less water than the industry average
  • Printed with ‘Green’ Ink: Ink used in our printing process is vegetable oil based

The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Vision

The world’s forests meet the social, ecological, and economic rights and needs of the present generation without compromising those of future generations.

The FSC Mission

FSC shall promote environmentally appropriate (ensures that the harvest of timber and non-timber products maintains the forest's biodiversity, productivity, and ecological processes); socially beneficial (helps both local people and society at large to enjoy long term benefits and also provides strong incentives to local people to sustain the forest resources and adhere to long-term management plans); and economically viable management (forest operations are structured and managed so as to be sufficiently profitable, without generating financial profit at the expense of the forest resource, the ecosystem, or affected communities) of the world's forests.
